Bike Path Cleared of Sand Blockage

When windstorms on Mar. 3 and 13 blew masses of sand onto the bike path and into Roosevelt Tunnel, Boca resident Sharon Kilbride alerted the L.A. County Department of Beaches & Harbors and the L.A. County Department of Public Works.

“The bike path was bad after the first windstorm,” Kilbride said. “After the second windstorm, … it was not even safe to ride your bike on it because of all the blockades and sand.”

Before the government agencies arrived with a bulldozer and dump truck to Will Rogers Beach, the Boca Residents Association paid twice for tunnel cleanup by unhoused individuals, who also do regular weekly tunnel sweeps. Anyone who would like to contribute to the effort can donate through a Venmo link posted above the tunnel entrances.

“After I alerted Beaches & Harbors about the conditions surrounding the tunnel with the excessive sand…, they showed up on Tuesday, March 18 and cleaned the surrounding areas around the tunnel so we would not face the same problems of excessive sand going inside the tunnels,” Kilbride said. “I reported the issues about the bike path with unpassable sand mounds along the bicycle route to County Public works. It took them two weeks to … clean the bike path.”
